What we install · Impact Glass Retrofit

Rarely the Answer It Sounds Like

Replacing only the glass in existing frames sounds cheaper. It usually does not achieve a rated assembly.

The frame and anchoring are part of the rating

An impact assembly is rated as a whole — glass, frame, anchoring and installation together. Putting impact glass into an old frame with old anchoring produces something that has better glass and is not a rated assembly, which means it neither performs as one nor documents as one.

The offer is usually made in good faith. Retrofit glazing exists, some systems have genuine approvals, and a contractor proposing it may believe it achieves the same outcome. The question that settles it is documentary: which approval covers the finished assembly, including the existing frame and its anchoring.

Where retrofit can work

  • Where the existing frame system has its own approval for it.
  • Where the anchoring can be verified and upgraded.
  • Where the whole assembly can be documented.
  • Rarely on older residential frames.
  • Never as a way to avoid a permit.

Why insurers care about documentation

Wind mitigation credits generally depend on demonstrating that openings are protected to a recognized standard, which means documentation an inspector can verify. Better glass in an undocumented assembly does not produce that evidence.

So a retrofit that improves the glass without producing a documented rated assembly may deliver some real protection and no premium benefit at all. That is worth establishing with your insurer before spending the money rather than after.

How we handle it

  1. 01Assess honestly whether a rated assembly is achievable.
  2. 02Say plainly when replacement is the only real option.
  3. 03Provide documentation where retrofit genuinely works.
  4. 04Never describe an unrated result as impact protection.

Ask what documentation a retrofit will produce. If nobody can tell you which approval the finished assembly falls under, it does not fall under one — and that matters for permitting and for insurance.

Said plainly

Where we stop

On most older residential frames, glass-only retrofit does not produce a rated assembly. We will say so rather than selling better glass as impact protection.

Why does the frame matter?
